For nearly 30 years, Ruben Ruiz has built his career as an attorney around a simple principle: stand up for people, seek the truth, and fight for what is right. His work has required him to listen carefully, examine the facts, ask difficult questions, navigate complex issues, and advocate with integrity for the people who placed their trust in him. Ruben’s connection to education predates his legal career by a significant margin. A graduate of the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1994, and the University of Akron School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor in 1997, Ruben brings a unique combination of experience in education, law, advocacy, and public service. Before becoming an attorney, Ruben was an educator. He taught at the elementary, middle school, and university/college levels and also worked at the high school level as a student advisor. Those experiences gave him firsthand insight into the different stages of a student’s educational journey and the important roles teachers, support staff, administrators, and families play in helping students succeed.
As a father of three school age children (high school, middle school and elementary) Ruben also understands education from a parent’s perspective. He knows that decisions made by a school district are more than policies, budgets, and numbers—they directly affect children, families, educators, and the future of the community. Today, Ruben is ready to bring that experience and the same commitment that has guided his legal career to the Pleasant Valley School District Board—not because our schools are failing, but because strong schools require strong, responsible leadership to remain strong.
Pleasant Valley has much to be proud of. Our students continue to demonstrate strong academic achievement, with the district performing in the Green level in both English Language Arts and Mathematics on the 2025 California School Dashboard. At the same time, the data show areas where we can and must continue improving, including chronic absenteeism, student suspensions, English Learner progress, and outcomes for some of our most vulnerable students.
Ruben believes we can celebrate our successes without becoming complacent about our challenges. Protect what works. Improve what doesn't.
As an attorney, Ruben understands that good decisions begin with good questions. As a former educator, he understands that those decisions ultimately have to work in classrooms and schools. And as a father, he understands the trust families place in their schools every day. As a board member, Ruben will bring these perspectives to district policies, programs, budgets, and priorities. He will examine the facts, listen to educators and families, consider different perspectives, and consistently ask one fundamental question: How will this decision help our students? Ruben believes academic excellence must remain at the heart of Pleasant Valley. Every student—regardless of background, ability, language, or circumstance—deserves access to a high-quality education and the support necessary to reach their potential. Ruben also believes teachers and school employees deserve respect, resources, and leadership that listens. Having worked in education himself, Ruben recognizes that educators and school employees are closest to students and understand firsthand the opportunities and challenges present in our schools. Their experience should matter when decisions affecting teaching and learning are made.
Parents must also remain meaningful partners in their children’s education. Ruben will advocate for open communication, greater transparency, and a district culture in which families feel welcome, informed, and heard—even when they disagree. And with the district responsible for tens of millions of dollars in public resources each year, Ruben believes fiscal responsibility and accountability are essential. Every dollar entrusted to the district should be managed responsibly, every major investment should have a clear purpose, and programs should be evaluated on whether they deliver meaningful results for students.
Ruben isn’t running to tell educators how to teach. He knows what it means to be an educator. He is running to provide responsible oversight, ask the tough questions, support those doing the work, represent the community, and help ensure Pleasant Valley continues moving forward.
For nearly 30 years, Ruben has stood beside people who needed someone willing to listen, advocate, and fight for their interests. Before that, he stood in classrooms and worked directly with students. And as a father of three, he understands how deeply parents care about the opportunities their children receive. He has also served as PTSA President and has coached many youth sports. Now, he is ready to bring those experiences together and stand up for Pleasant Valley, our students, our educators, our families, and our community.
